110

This year the Venture staff was very busy. We worked a lot of extra
hours including Saturdays. Everyone now on the yearbook staff has put a
lot of time and talent into it. We hope this is the best yearbook
Kempsville junior has ever had.

The Venture Staff,
Mr. Camb Ashley, our dear devoted sponsor

Ricky Mundt, our editor who still can't remember to use green pencils for
headlines

Laura Woodberry, one of our photographers that got sick after going to
the library

Vicki Jacobs, who always ran off to practice gymnastics at nine
Pam Wells, our all-around yelling person who thought everyone else was
doing the thing wrong

Diane Wetherington, who liked to keep the ad books in her locker
Roxanne Wood, who makes dresses instead of yearbooks
Jeff Furr, our sports editor that didn't do sports but did do the cheerlead-
ers with Ricky
Dana Morris, the girl who knew everybody

Debbie Megonigle, who instead of working on the yearbook went to
Spain

Janet Widgeon, who had to hop along on crutches while we finished the
yearbook

Beth Katz, our business manager who couldn't number the backs of the

eighth grade pictures right
And everyone else, Tom Foley, Jacobien VanHolthe, Phillip Gray, John

Speight, Susan Gustofson, Annette Hurdle, Robin Hathaway, Mike

Filippi, and Kenny Vollmer, who made this thing possible.
Special thanks goes to our parents for giving us rides to and from school

and to Mrs. Baldwin for letting us use her Africa.
And also Francine Cullen and Rena Coughlin who I forgot to put in the

first part but who also worked hard on the yearbook

First team in city

Girl's basketball team

The Girls' Basketball Team for 1973-74, the
first ever at Kempsville Jr., had a record of 10
wins and 1 loss. The Girls won the regular sea-
son championship with an 8 and 1 record.

In the Virginia Beach Jr. High School Tour-
nament, the Girls defeated Virginia Beach Jr.
High 27-17 and Plaza Jr. High 43-17 for the
Tournament Championship. Linda Stephenson
was voted Most Valuable Player for the Tour-
nament.

The team averaged 38 points per game on
offense and only 24 points per game on de-
fense. Each win was a total team effort with a
balance attack — each girl gave 100%. Linda
Stephenson averaged 15 points per game,
while Bernadette Mosley averaged 11 re-
bounds a game. However, the main success of
the team was a great defense. Doing a fine job
on defense were Amy Bram, Susan Sawyer,
Crystal Lapp, Debbie Erwin, and Sharon Geer.

This team of 1973-74 was truly a number
"1" team — first year for a Girls' Team, plus a
first place trophy.

CONGRATULATIONS to our CHAMP-
IONS!!!

CHEERLEADERS

Cheerleading is a fun and exciting activity. The twelve girls selected were chosen from among hundreds for their ability to cheer, pep,
personality, and grades. They were required to attend all games, pep rallies, meetings, and practices.

Although cheering is lots of fun, it has its troublesome times also, considering the three casualties (girls on crutches) that required fast
changes in plans and cheers. This year there was a new and delightful addition to the squad, four year old mascot: Lizzie Bates. She was a
real "smash" at one of the pep rallies when she did the straddles in the formation Jump and jive.

The cheerleaders had a lot of good times supporting all the athletic teams, riding buses to games with them, giving them parties at the end
of each season, and following them to the tournaments. Teaching boys a few cheers for the student-faculty game proved quite a challenge
but despite the struggle, it was also a lot of laughs. Winning both games was a triumph.

The cheerleading clinic was a very difficult time for everyone. There were many activities to organize for hundreds of hopeful girls. The
cheerleaders had to teach them the best cheerleading motions. Yet, it was an exciting, fun-filled project as many new friendships were
founded.

Toward the end of the year, the cheerleaders had many enjoyable memories to look back on. It was certainly a profitable year! A special
thanks is in order for Mrs. Rachel Flanagan, sponsor, for the many hours she devoted to the girls to help them have a year to remember.
To all the faculty and student-body the cheerleaders bid a farewell, with a reminder that:

"We're NO. One!!"
